Question: How,Why or Who decided that a rest/sleep period would be called a "NAP"?
All my life ( and it has been a long one) I have heard the term "NAP" for a rest/sleep period. I never could find out where/why or who decided to call it that. At age 70 I decided I needed to know the orgin of the term. Anyone?
Answer: Well, I asked Webster and his unsatisfactory reply was that it goes back to Middle English nappen which goes back to Old English hnappian, which is related to Old High German hnaffezan, meaning to doze or sleep lightly for a short time. Pooh. I thought he'd come up with something more interesting than that! He usually carries things back past Latin and Greek all the way to the Proto-Indo-Europeans. He's an utter failure this time. I say we thump him twice on the head, eh wot?
